A look back.
Same thing this year. I am cognitively uncomfortable with this weekend. But the Blue Angels have been flying around for four days, and they are SO goddamned badass.

When I was up in Canada a few weeks back, they had an airshow going on not too terribly far from where we were playing. A stealth bomber flew over and I have to admit that I thought it was just about the coolest thing I'd ever seen.
Yep. That's what I mean. I KNOW the arguments against it all, and I'm intellectually uncomfortable with the fuel/propaganda/recruitment etc. elements of all of this.
But it's so dang cool it's hard to remember that when you actually see the jets.
Interestingly, I looked at the blue angels web site, and they are surprisingly forthcoming about a) the fact that their sole purpose is for recruitment, and b) they say exactly how much fuel they burn during a show and during an entire year.
This gets into the confusing area where I ask if it's better to be annoying, wasteful, and cool while admitting it, or if it's better to be completely phony and lie while dazzling us with cool jets.
Sometimes I'm glad I'm not in charge. I can just not make that decision, be wowed by the jets and then whine about the fuel a little bit later on. It is certainly easier to be me than someone who has to decide that stuff. (there's an idea for a post here)
