Ah, the legendary Old Grey Whistle broadcast. If I remember properly from Sting's autobiography, a can of hairspray misfired in his eyes or something, so he wore the sunglasses to hide his bloodshot look. Something like that. He tells the story that he saw kids on the street wearing big sunglasses the next day and that it was a sign of his sudden fame. That and the janitor who whistled "Roxanne" or "Walking on the Moon" or something. It's a great story even if it's a bit of hyperbole.
I still can't believe they played "Next to You" when I saw them in LA.
