Phone Wanderlust
It happened again.
A few years ago, I obtained my first BlackBerry. It was more accurately described as a Blueberry, and I thought that it was just about the coolest thing ever. I'd had Palm Pilots, mobile phones, and even a Treo before, but the BlackBerry was taking coolness to a whole new level. Mobile phone, mobile email, rudimentary web browser - all in one device. Very cool.
And then, a little less than a year ago, I got a new BlackBerry. Better web browsing, smaller form factor, and Bluetooth enabled, it was pretty sweet. But then it stopped working and so I got an upgrade. The newest, slickest, coolest smart phone around. (Or, at least it was.) It takes pictures, it browses the web, gets my email, plays movies and mp3s, and works as a USB flash drive on my computer. I've had it for about two weeks and it's totally great.
And then this happens. Why do I let myself have wanderlust with my mobile phones?

I had the Treo (for Teo!) and I loved loved loved it...except that it sucked. It was an earlier version with some reception kinks, and the phone feature wasn't up to par. So...I went and got me a 7501t just like you. Mine has worked for almost 2 years, so unfortunatly I haven't been able to upgrade. I still don't like it nearly as much as the Treo. I can't stand the wheel-of-poor-functionality on the side. But it does what I need it to do. I'm interested in the Pearl...keep me posted on its performance.
As for the Apple? I saw that on the news. I dunno. I'm one of the few without an iPod, and I'm far more concerned about reception and compatibility with Outlook. So my guess is that it's really not for me. Unless of course, it is, in which case, gimme.
When my BB finally crashes and my hand is forced to a new smartphone, I'll probably head back to the beautiful, wonderful, fabulous world of the Treo. For what it's worth, I used to listen to MP3s on that thing on the train all the time, and this was about 2-3 years ago. It wasn't an ipod and i had to use a memory chip for the files, but that thing was awesome.
The Pearl is really groovy in most respects. It has loads of functions that I didn't think I'd use but find myself using more and more, which is nice. But comparing a BlackBerry to a Palm is kind of like comparing a Windows PC to a Mac. (And here I give away my computer prejudices...) BlackBerrys do lots of neat things. They work well. But the interface seems like it was designed by, well, computer programmers. And the Palm, like the Mac, has a user interface that feels like it was designed by designers. Everything works, but more than that, everything goes where it should and things turn out to be where you think they ought to be.
BlackBerrys are nice. I like mine. But given the option, I'd rather have a Palm interface and OS any day.
Oh, forgot to mention:
The Pearl has gotten rid of the wheel-of-poor-functionality in favor of a trackball that functions as a mouse. Huge improvement.
Did we just turn into a tech blog? :-)
I'm pretty sure no one will confuse us as techies. At least not me.
My BB? Eh. It does just barely enough to keep me from chucking it. Maybe if I get an internship I'll buy something new as a gift to myself.
