Microcosm

M&Ms are inordinately more complicated these days than they ever were when I was a kid. As I recall, the complete menu of options available in the M&M world were as follows:

1. Plain
2. Peanut

Now, one can order custom colors, messages, and flavor options (milk chocolate, peanut, almond, crunch, mini, and peanut butter are among the current options). When the heck did life get so complicated?

Blame it on capitalism, as Steve Almond does in his brief, inspired essay, "Where Have All The Candy Bars Gone?":

I have to say I like the krispy ones very much BUT, the minis and the maxis? WRONG. For the obvious reason: too much coating too little chocolate, too much chocolate not enough coating. The coating to chocolate ratio on the original M&M is exactly right.

But the world seems to be about options these days, mixing and matching all kinds of foods best left alone.
