Bad Driver Warning

Coupla bad graphics drivers on the new machine. When I use it, it's freakin' great. When I leave the damn thing alone for 10 minutes, it crashes. Seems to be a flaw in the BIOS and graphics interphase. Sounds like I know what I'm doing, right? WRONG. Just trolling discussion boards looking for fixes. Way too many crashes, and some dangerous ones. Had to reload WXP2, losing all of the work I had done over the past 4 days. Luckily I hadn't developed a loving, trusting relationship with my new computer yet and I had backed up my school work. Anyway, I'm giving it one more shot (meaning tomorrow) and then if the crashes persist, I will return this thing for a full refund and buy the Fujitsu. I have been remarkably productive over the past four days with this machine, so I no longer have guilt about the purchcase. It's a matter of it, you know, staying on at this point. So far, today's fixes are working, but it's back to its first-day sluggishness. That should improve as the processer learns what I do (this is true), but signs are that this machine's time may be limited in dear Teo's hands.

I can hear DNA laughing all the way from Philly.

Rebooted my PowerBook the other day. Didn't need to - just felt I ought to.

OO! Ow.

I repeat: my previous experiences with Dell have been great. My desktop is trusty and dependable after almost three years. I want the new laptop to configure with that.

Though it is getting harder to make that argument.

Does Apple make a laptop with a 12.1" screen? Maybe I'll look.

Still want the Dell, I just want it so that it works.

OK i'll stop now.

I'm typing this on my beloved G4 PowerBook with a 12" display.

Dell is wonderful. It's Windows that's the problem. *grin*

I looked at that online today, and it's pretty close to the specs and price I want. The problem: microsoft software is extra, and that purchase is non-negotiable. I make my living in word docs. So I'm nervous about the constant conversions. So there's the worry and the added cost.

Minor problems: I'd like to install some other software that is PC only, so I'd have to forego that. But the other stuff is more important.

How's the wireless connectivity?

Returning the Dell. Bastards. Actually, Kevlar, I think Dell is the problem and not Windows. I know you'd disagree with that, but I've never had any trouble with Windows. And Dell, until now, has been great. But on this one, they dropped the ball. In order to exchange the unit (which is what I want to do), I have to get out of the customer care queue and back into tech support. Problem is, I've already run through tech support for a loooong time, and customer care only takes returns, not exchanges. Which is baffling, since I was already on with tech support. So Dell loses my business, likely forever.

The drag is that Dell offers completely customized units, which is what attracted me to them way back in the first place. I go to the other manufacturers, including Apple, and I can't get the precise configuration that I want.

And by the way, more discussion board searches comparing the unit that I bought with the 12" apple powerbook results: the PCs win the discussions pretty convincingly. So the public debate has not swayed me. Looks like the powerbook and the Fujitsu would be very close in price, so I may still get the Fujitsu.

This conversation is likely way boring for everyone except me.

No worries. I'm not really as much of a "Mac baby" (you know, that guy who constantly gripes about how much Windows sucks and is inferior and all that) as I might have led everyone to believe. My honest opnion is that both operating systems are pretty darn useful. Still, it's fun to poke at Windows from time to time, because I almost never have to reboot my PowerBook.

I'm actually probably going to switch my portable laptop to Windows this coming year but keep my Mac desktop for all the production/media stuff. It's mostly from fatigue - trying to have my beloved Mac work seamlessly within my Windows work environment creates some headaches. And there are always "Windows only" software utilities and apps that are useful, but I can't access them.

I just put myself to sleep. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

KEVLAR understands. If I were a graphics guy or a ProTools guy, I'd be all about the mac. But since I'm a documents guy, documents live in the Windows world, and no amount of Steve Jobs bellyaching will change that.

The Dell is on the way back. The Fujitsu is on the way here. The only thing the Fujitsu doesn't have is the 12.1" screen. It's a 13.3". BUT, the 12.1" was a widescreen, so the 13.3 might feel the same. Plus it was cheaper, and it won't come with pre-loaded Dell crapola.

And you know, if you really think aboutiszzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
