And I did end up watching The Shining last night. Gotta say, besides being brilliant and freakin scary...there is a great sense of humor in that film. Kubrick is a riot.
And I think Shelley Duval was awesome. Awesomely weird and wacky. The way she runs up the stairs with the knife in her hand towards the end of the film was downright funny, but I totally buy it. And the scene where she's got the bat and backing up the stairs is great.
I cracked up at Jack throughout the film. But not because he was funny, although he was, but because it's just so over-the-top but right on for what the film needed.
I was talking at the TV throughout. "Danny, don't do it. Don't go in there. Danny, stop riding your big wheel. Danny, don't you know that you really need to not play by yourself in that big creepy haunted hotel? Danny, the ball thrown by nobody is a sign of something very bad about to happen."
Laugh out loud moments: - TUESDAY - Scatman Crothers watching TV in Miami. - Jack, in the first scene when interrupted by Wendy, who just wanted to give him sandwiches.
Only two bad shots in the film. The weird bear guy at the end, and the "haunted" lobby shot that had skeletons and ghosts. Both shots only last a few seconds, and it's at the end when everything's up for grabs. Neither shot really works or is necessary (and both are pretty cheesy), but total screen time combined is about 5 or 6 seconds. So if that's all that was bad in a long movie, well, OK by me.
And I don't think I rightfully appreciated Jack in past years. Man, that was one unbelievable character he played. He totally hooked me last night.
yes, a very good thiller from beginning to end. Why Shelley Duval never became a bigger hit as an actress, I don't know. She really is great in those roles that are "Awesomely weird and wacky". jack is quintessential jack.
The parody "Shining" just points out all the total bullshit things about movie-making of today, I feel. It also uses background music in such a skillful way of pointing out what the characters are experiencing internally, in this case a heart-warming tale of a young boy and his search for a father-figure, or some such drivel.

Jack -- scary. Eerie dead twins -- scary. Dead lady in bathtub -- superscary.
Shelly Duvall? Really not.
OMG!

Yeah, the guy that made "Shining" has a huge future as a guy that produces trailers for bad movies. Guy's brilliant.
p.s. i don't hate them. but the t-shirt is scary to me. that's what i'm trying to say. the still shot alone is horrifying.
